Her father, Emilio Diaz, was a second generation Cuban American and worked as a foreman for an oil company. Her mother, Billie, was an import/export broker of English, German and Native American descent (a complex blend of bloodlines that helps to explain Cameron's outrageous good looks). There was also an older sister, Chimene.

Cameron Diaz won her first film role in the blockbuster action-comedy The Mask, starring rubber-faced comic Jim Carrey. With no previous acting experience, she had originally auditioned for a supporting character in the film. Twelve callbacks later, however, she was hired to play torch-singing mob moll Tina Carlyle, the female lead. After the success of The Mask, Diaz was touted as the next big thing in Hollywood and wooed by a number of prominent filmmakers to appear in their projects.

Cameron Diaz successfully won a ‘blackmail’ case against a photographer who threatened to release topless photographs of the star unless she bought them for millions of dollars. Diaz successfully proved the signature on the release form for the photographs was fake. She also accepted damages from a UK newspaper, which suggested she had a romantic involvement with a married man whilst in a relationship with Justin Timberlake.
